My piece was inspired by the Fijian woman today; and by ‘Fijian’ I mean all of us who are Fiji citizens and belong to Fiji, regardless of race, we all share a nationality. I have used wire and wood to construct the piece. The wire and wood symbolise a fence that presents us with certain boundaries.
Barbed Fences come from an era of slavery. Women across the globe have come a long way in the battle for equality. In Fiji women have topped and has had a presence in almost all professional fields. In our home lives we have stood up for our opinions and overcomed restrictions from our cultures and religons to be more independent, but has the average woman achieved all that we set out to get from days of oppression?
I feel that though the place of woman in soceity has come a long way, there is still the reality of restriction in our lives becasuse we are women.Has the average women still the freedom to walk the night – to bathe in moonlight and feel the night dew on her feet? Has she the capacity to protect her childern from those who speak the language of terror? Has that woman found the dignity to recongise her own self before what her society might think of her?
We have come a long way and yet we are still not free – in our thoughts, in our actions and from ourselves.I see the obstacles of this freedom often stemming from our own cultures, traditions, loved ones and soceity itself. These conditioned perceptions are in reality the bigger problem than laws and regulation as our laws and regulations in theory give us that freedom but it is often our soceity that restricts it.
My artwork represents the average woman of ethnic Indian origin, who is yet to complete her studies but has her hands already decorated in henna and is getting married tomorrow. My artwork represents the average Fijian woman who works all day for a rich shopkeeper to go home to be beaten by her husband for not giving him money for his kava. My artwork represents the young Chinese girl who doesn’t know what the sun feels like on her face for when she comes out of the garment factory, the sun has already set.
My artwork represents the women of Fiji and her struggle still in 2007 – Womens liberation Are we There Yet?
*The above is the write up for my art work , which was for the breast cancer society and the theme was , as mentioned above “Women’s Liberation – Are We There Yet?” The art work is mainly on Fiji women, and how i see it as my point of view.Everything is my own work , and the following art has been submitted to the cancer society. There are some pics attached down below for you to have a look but if u really wanna see it for real then go down to the cancer society , they will have it to display !
